SPDR (pronounced ‘spider’) stands for Standard & Poor’s depositary receipt. SPDR’s are ETFs issued by State Street Global Advisors, one of the veterans of the Exchange Traded Fund industry, having listed their first fund back in 1993.
There is an extensive list of SPDR funds across many asset classes. All of the funds are ‘physically backed’ - not synthetic. This means they each fund holds underlying assets rather than using derivatives to generate returns.
